Neurodiversity... what does it actually mean?

Updated: Aug 8

By Dr Susan Chan

For over 15 years as a coach and psychotherapist, I have passionately dedicated myself to being an active diversity and inclusion practitioner.  Embracing my dyslexia, I excel in communication, problem-solving, and creativity, although it may sometimes impact how I process information.  Let's celebrate our unique strengths and differences!  Lately, I've noticed a growing interest from individuals seeking assistance with neurodiversity.  Our brains are unique, each with its own distinct 'wiring'.  My expertise lies in neurodiversity coaching, a field I am truly passionate about.  Perhaps, like me, you know someone seeking support for their neurodiversity journey.  Having personally navigated challenges in education and the workplace due to being neurodiverse, I understand the importance of support.  If you or a loved one has faced similar hurdles, remember that help is readily available.

Neurodiversity Coaching

Neurodiversity is now being recognised for its strengths and needs. Embrace and appreciate your individuality and talents. Despite our differences, everyone possesses unique skills. I am a neurodiversity coach who collaborates with you, emphasising active listening and compassionate communication. Neurodiversity is no longer seen as a weakness. There has been a shift in attitudes over time, expanding from just autism and ADHD to encompass a wider range of neurological conditions. When we discuss diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI), we often consider factors like race, gender, sexual orientation, and physical disability. However, mental and cognitive diversity should also be acknowledged. More individuals are openly identifying as neurodiverse nowadays. Approximately 15-20% of people globally are neurodivergent, including individuals in your workplace, friends, or family. Seek support and understanding, recognising that your success stems from your unique thought processes.
